Lorem Ipsum Generator

Create dummy text for designs, mock-ups and layouts, in exactly the amount you need.

🔒 Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” has filled the gaps in page layouts, templates and mock-ups for centuries. This generator gives you as much of it as you need, by paragraph, sentence or word, as plain text or ready-made HTML.

How to use the lorem ipsum generator

  1. Enter how many you need.
  2. Choose paragraphs, sentences or words.
  3. Keep Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” ticked for the classic opening, or untick it for a random start.
  4. Tick Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags for HTML.
  5. Click Copy text. Click Generate again for a different version.

The status line shows the word and character count, which is handy when you need to fill a space of a set length.

How the text is generated

The generator builds text from a pool of just over 100 Latin-looking words drawn from the traditional lorem ipsum passage and its common extended versions:

  • A sentence has 6 to 14 random words, starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Longer sentences get a comma partway through so the rhythm looks natural.
  • A paragraph has 4 to 7 sentences.
  • With the classic option on, the first sentence is always the familiar “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.”
words per sentence = random 6–14
sentences per paragraph = random 4–7
average paragraph ≈ 5.5 × 10 = about 55 words

Worked example

Ask for 3 paragraphs with the classic opening:

  • Paragraph 1 starts with the classic 19-word sentence, followed by 4 to 7 random sentences.
  • Paragraphs 2 and 3 have 4 to 7 random sentences each.
  • On average that is about 55 words per paragraph plus the opening line, so around 185 words in total, although each run varies.

Ask for 5 words with the classic option and you get exactly “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.”

A short history

The passage comes from Cicero’s philosophical work on ethics, written in 45 BC. The original line “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…” means roughly “nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain”. An unknown typesetter scrambled it into dummy text, and it spread through printing and later through desktop publishing software in the 1980s.

Tips for using placeholder text

  • Match the real length. If your headlines will be 8 words, test with 8 words. Placeholder text that is much shorter or longer than the real content hides layout problems.
  • Test extremes. Try a very long paragraph and a one-word heading to check the design copes with both.
  • Use real content when you can. Draft copy, even rough, reveals problems that lorem ipsum can’t, such as long product names or translated text.
  • Mind other languages. German and Finnish words run long, while Chinese and Japanese take far fewer characters. If your site will be translated, test the layout with sample text in those languages too.
  • Search before launch. A quick search for “lorem” across your site catches leftover filler before visitors or search engines see it.

Frequently asked questions

What does lorem ipsum mean?

It is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. The words have been cut, altered and rearranged, so the text has no real meaning, which is exactly why it works as a placeholder.

Why do designers use lorem ipsum instead of real text?

Readable text draws attention to what it says. Lorem ipsum has a natural-looking mix of word lengths, so people focus on the layout, fonts and spacing instead of the content.

Is lorem ipsum free to use?

Yes. It is based on a text more than 2,000 years old and is in the public domain. You can use it in any personal or commercial project.

Should I publish a page with lorem ipsum on it?

No. Search engines see it as low-quality filler and visitors find it confusing. Replace all placeholder text with real content before a page goes live, and search your site for "lorem" before launch.

Can I get HTML instead of plain text?

Yes. Tick "Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags" and each paragraph is wrapped in a paragraph element, ready to paste into HTML.
