Salary to Hourly Calculator
Turn a salary into an hourly rate, or an hourly rate into a salary, and see your pay for every common pay period.

Comparing a salaried job with an hourly one, or pricing your freelance time, means converting between pay periods. This calculator turns any amount, per hour, day, week, month or year, into all the others, based on the hours and weeks you actually work.
How to use the salary to hourly calculator
- Enter a pay amount.
- Choose whether it is per hour, day, week, month or year.
- Set your hours per week and days per week.
- Set the paid weeks per year. Keep 52 if your time off is paid, or lower it if not.
Every pay period updates at once.
The formulas
Everything goes through the yearly amount:
Yearly = Hourly × Hours per week × Paid weeks
Hourly = Yearly ÷ (Hours per week × Paid weeks)
Weekly = Yearly ÷ Paid weeks
Monthly = Yearly ÷ 12
Biweekly = Yearly ÷ 26
Semimonthly = Yearly ÷ 24
Worked example
A job pays $60,000 a year for 40 hours a week, 5 days a week, with paid vacation (52 paid weeks).
- Hours per year = 40 × 52 = 2,080
- Hourly = 60,000 ÷ 2,080 ≈ $28.85
- Daily = 60,000 ÷ 260 ≈ $230.77
- Weekly = 60,000 ÷ 52 ≈ $1,153.85
- Biweekly = 60,000 ÷ 26 ≈ $2,307.69
- Semimonthly = 60,000 ÷ 24 = $2,500
- Monthly = 60,000 ÷ 12 = $5,000
If the same $60,000 came with two weeks of unpaid leave, the paid weeks drop to 50 and the hourly rate rises to 60,000 ÷ 2,000 = $30.00.
Common salaries as hourly rates
Based on 2,080 hours a year:
| Annual salary | Hourly rate |
|---|---|
| $30,000 | $14.42 |
| $40,000 | $19.23 |
| $50,000 | $24.04 |
| $75,000 | $36.06 |
| $100,000 | $48.08 |
A shortcut that works the other way: double the hourly rate and add three zeros. $25 an hour is roughly $50,000 a year.
Comparing salaried and hourly jobs
The headline numbers do not tell the whole story:
- Overtime. Hourly workers in many countries earn extra for long weeks. Salaried employees often do not, so a salaried job with 50-hour weeks pays less per hour than it seems. Enter 50 hours to see the real rate.
- Benefits. Health insurance, retirement contributions and paid leave can be worth 20–30% of salary. Factor them in when comparing a salaried offer with contract work.
- Contractors pay more costs. A freelancer usually covers their own taxes, equipment and unpaid gaps between projects, so a freelance hourly rate needs to be well above an employee’s rate to match their income.
Tips and pitfalls
- Use your real hours. If you regularly work 45 hours, your effective hourly rate is lower than the 40-hour figure.
- Months are not four weeks. A month averages about 4.33 weeks, which is why monthly pay is yearly ÷ 12, not weekly × 4.
- Part-time works too. Set the hours to 20 or 30 a week to compare part-time offers fairly.
- All results are before tax. Use them for comparisons, not as your take-home pay.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly wage?
Divide the salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a standard full-time job that is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so $60,000 a year is about $28.85 an hour.
What is a quick way to estimate it in my head?
Divide the annual salary by 2,000. That is roughly 40 hours × 50 weeks, and it gives a slightly high but useful estimate. $60,000 ÷ 2,000 = $30 an hour.
Should I count paid vacation and holidays?
If your vacation and holidays are paid, keep 52 weeks, because you are paid for them. If you are a contractor or your time off is unpaid, reduce the paid weeks so the hourly figure reflects what you really earn per hour worked.
Is biweekly pay the same as twice a month?
No. Biweekly means every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year. Twice a month (semimonthly) is 24 paychecks. On a $60,000 salary, a biweekly check is about $2,307.69 and a semimonthly check is $2,500.
Are these amounts before or after tax?
Before tax. Your take-home pay will be lower after income tax, social security, health insurance and other deductions.
