Pressure turns up in more places than you might expect: car and bike tires, espresso machines, weather maps, scuba tanks, air compressors and blood pressure cuffs. Each field has its own favorite unit, and equipment from different regions often disagrees. This converter moves between the six most common pressure units instantly.
How to use the pressure converter
- Enter the reading in Value.
- Select the unit you have in From and the one you need in To.
- See the converted value, plus every other unit in the table below.
Pressure conversion factors
| Unit | In pascals | In PSI |
|---|---|---|
| 1 pascal (Pa) | 1 | 0.000145 |
| 1 kilopascal (kPa) | 1,000 | 0.145 |
| 1 bar | 100,000 | 14.504 |
| 1 PSI | 6,894.76 | 1 |
| 1 atmosphere (atm) | 101,325 | 14.696 |
| 1 mmHg | 133.32 | 0.01934 |
Common pressure references
| Application | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Car tires | 30–35 PSI ≈ 2.1–2.4 bar ≈ 210–240 kPa |
| Road bike tires | 80–100 PSI ≈ 5.5–6.9 bar |
| Espresso extraction | about 9 bar ≈ 130 PSI |
| Full scuba tank | 200–300 bar ≈ 2,900–4,350 PSI |
| Sea-level air pressure | 1 atm ≈ 1,013 hPa |
| Healthy blood pressure | below 120/80 mmHg |
Tips
- Check tire pressure cold. Tire pressure rises as tires warm up while driving. The figure on your door-jamb sticker assumes cold tires.
- Weather maps use hectopascals (hPa). 1 hPa equals 1 millibar and 100 Pa. Standard sea-level pressure is 1,013.25 hPa. Readings below about 1,000 hPa usually mean unsettled weather.
- Watch for “g” and “a” suffixes. In engineering, psig means gauge pressure and psia means absolute pressure, which is gauge pressure plus about 14.7 PSI at sea level.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert PSI to bar?
Divide PSI by about 14.504, or multiply by 0.0689. A typical car tire pressure of 32 PSI is about 2.21 bar.
What is 1 atmosphere in other units?
One standard atmosphere is defined as exactly 101,325 Pa. That is 101.325 kPa, 1.01325 bar, about 14.696 PSI and about 760 mmHg.
Is tire pressure gauge pressure or absolute pressure?
Gauge pressure. A tire gauge reads the pressure above the surrounding air, so a "flat" tire reads 0 even though the air inside is still at about 1 atmosphere absolute.
