Area is where unit mistakes get expensive. A flooring order, a rental listing or a land deal can all be off by a factor of ten if square feet and square meters get mixed up. This converter covers every common area unit, from square centimeters for small surfaces up to square miles for land, and shows them all side by side.
How to use the area converter
- Enter the area in Value.
- Choose your starting unit in From and your target in To.
- Read the result instantly, or scan the table for every unit at once.
If you only have room dimensions, multiply length by width first, using the same unit for both, then convert the total.

Worked examples
- An 1,800 sq ft house is 1,800 × 0.0929 ≈ 167.2 m².
- A 12 ft × 15 ft bedroom is 180 sq ft, which is about 16.7 m².
- A 2-hectare plot is 2 × 2.471 ≈ 4.94 acres.
- A 90 m² apartment is 90 × 10.764 ≈ 969 sq ft.
Tips for property and flooring
- Listings count area differently. Some countries quote gross area, including walls and shared spaces. Others quote net usable area. Check which one before you compare prices per square meter or square foot.
- Buy extra flooring. Add 5–10% to the measured area to cover cuts, waste and pattern matching. Add more for diagonal layouts.
- Odd-shaped rooms: split the room into rectangles, work out each area, and add them together before converting.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square meter?
One square meter is about 10.764 square feet. To convert quickly, multiply square meters by 10.76, or divide square feet by 10.76 to go the other way.
How big is an acre?
An acre is 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square meters. That is roughly three-quarters of an American football field without the end zones.
How many acres are in a hectare?
One hectare is 10,000 square meters, about 2.471 acres. So a 10-hectare farm is roughly 24.7 acres.
Why can't I just square the length conversion?
You can, and that is exactly how area factors work. Since 1 foot is 0.3048 m, 1 square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². The mistake people make is using the length factor (0.3048) on an area, which gives an answer about 3.3 times too large.
