Liquids get measured in a confusing mix of units. Cars use liters in one country and gallons in another. Recipes switch between cups and milliliters, and a “gallon” or “pint” isn’t even the same size in the US and the UK. This converter handles metric and US customary units plus the UK gallon, and shows every result at once.
How to use the volume converter
- Type the amount into Value.
- Choose your starting unit and the unit you want.
- Read the answer, or use the table to see all the units together.
The cup, pint, quart, gallon, tablespoon and teaspoon options use US definitions. The UK gallon is listed separately.
Volume conversion table
| Unit | In milliliters |
|---|---|
| 1 teaspoon (US) | 4.93 mL |
| 1 tablespoon (US) | 14.79 mL |
| 1 fluid ounce (US) | 29.57 mL |
| 1 cup (US) | 236.59 mL |
| 1 pint (US) | 473.18 mL |
| 1 quart (US) | 946.35 mL |
| 1 gallon (US) | 3,785.41 mL |
| 1 gallon (UK) | 4,546.09 mL |
| 1 cubic meter | 1,000,000 mL |
The US system builds up in neat steps: 3 tsp = 1 tbsp, 2 tbsp = 1 fl oz, 8 fl oz = 1 cup, 2 cups = 1 pint, 2 pints = 1 quart, and 4 quarts = 1 gallon.
Worked examples
- A 15-gallon fuel tank (US) holds 15 × 3.785 ≈ 56.8 liters.
- 2 liters of soda is about 67.6 US fl oz, or roughly 8.5 cups.
- 750 mL of wine is about 25.4 fl oz.
- 3 cups of stock is 3 × 236.6 ≈ 710 mL.
US vs. UK units: a common trap
A British pint is 568 mL, and a US pint is 473 mL. That is why a pint of beer in a London pub is noticeably larger than one in New York. The same gap applies to gallons, so fuel economy in “miles per gallon” isn’t directly comparable between the two countries. When you follow an older British recipe or read UK car specs, set the unit to UK gallon or adjust for it.
Frequently asked questions
How many liters are in a gallon?
A US gallon is 3.785 liters. A UK (imperial) gallon is bigger, at 4.546 liters. Make sure you know which one a source means, because the difference is about 20%.
How many milliliters are in a cup?
A US customary cup is about 236.6 mL. Many recipes and nutrition labels round this to 240 mL, while metric cups in Australia and elsewhere are 250 mL.
How many fluid ounces are in a liter?
About 33.8 US fluid ounces. A standard 500 mL water bottle holds about 16.9 fl oz.
Can I convert volume to weight with this tool?
Not directly, because that depends on the ingredient's density. A cup of water weighs about 237 g, but a cup of flour is only about 120–130 g. Use a dedicated cooking converter for ingredient weights.
