Weight conversions come up constantly. A gym plate might be marked in pounds while your app tracks kilograms. Recipes swing between grams and ounces, and luggage limits, shipping rates and medication doses each use whichever unit their country prefers. This converter switches between all the common units in one step and shows the full set of results, so you can compare kilograms, pounds and stone without retyping anything.

How to use the weight converter

  1. Enter the weight in the Value box.
  2. Choose the unit you have in From and the unit you need in To.
  3. The answer appears immediately, with a table below showing the same weight in every unit.

Click Swap units to flip the direction, for example from kg → lb to lb → kg.

Conversion factors

Unit In kilograms Also equals
1 gram 0.001 kg 1,000 milligrams
1 ounce 0.028349523 kg 28.35 grams
1 pound 0.45359237 kg 16 ounces
1 stone 6.35029318 kg 14 pounds
1 US ton 907.18474 kg 2,000 pounds
1 metric ton 1,000 kg ≈ 2,204.6 pounds

Worked examples

  • 70 kg to pounds: 70 ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 154.3 lb.
  • 180 lb to kilograms: 180 × 0.45359237 ≈ 81.6 kg.
  • 250 g to ounces: 250 ÷ 28.3495 ≈ 8.82 oz. That is roughly a standard 8-ounce block of butter plus a little.
  • A 23 kg airline bag limit is about 50.7 lb, which is why US airlines quote 50 lb.

Mental math shortcuts

  • kg → lb: double the number, then add 10%. So 80 kg becomes 160 + 16 = 176 lb (exact: 176.4).
  • lb → kg: halve the number, then subtract 10%. So 200 lb becomes 100 − 10 = 90 kg (exact: 90.7).
  • oz → g: multiply by 28, or by 30 for a quick kitchen estimate.

Where each unit is used

Kilograms and grams are the standard almost everywhere and in all science and medicine. The United States uses pounds and ounces for body weight, groceries and shipping. In the UK and Ireland, people often still state body weight in stone and pounds, even though shops sell food in metric. When you read nutrition labels, sports results or product specs from another country, a converter like this saves the guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

One kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds. Going the other way, one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, which is how the pound has been legally defined since 1959.

How do I convert stone to kilograms?

One stone is 14 pounds, or about 6.35 kg. To convert a weight like 11 st 4 lb, work out the total pounds first (11 × 14 + 4 = 158 lb), then multiply by 0.4536 to get about 71.7 kg.

Is a US ton the same as a metric ton?

No. A US (short) ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907 kg. A metric ton, or tonne, is 1,000 kg, about 2,205 pounds. The UK long ton of 2,240 pounds is a third, now rarely used, unit.

What is the difference between weight and mass?

Strictly, kilograms and pounds measure mass, the amount of matter in an object. Weight is the force gravity puts on that mass. In everyday use the two words mean the same thing, and on Earth the conversion is the same either way.
